55th Annual Miss. Chinatown Los Angeles Pageant Crowns Miss Corrie Chan as Queen

On Saturday, January 18, 2020, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles gathered together over 500 guests at the Sheraton San Gabriel to present the 55th Annual Miss Chinatown Los Angeles Competition. The theme this year centers around three pillars: Empowerment, Mentorship and Community Service. The newly reinvented contest is no longer a beauty pageant. Instead it showcased the next generation of leaders in the Chinese American community – role models who embody principles of leadership, equality, integrity, and vision. Each of the fourteen candidates competed on the basis of a personal platform or issue they are passionate about. Each winner received an educational scholarship and an equal dollar match to the charitable organization of her choice. For this year’s competition, each candidate has also been paired with a senior female mentor who is a business and community leader and received one-on-one coaching, networking opportunities and professional development that will launch her career and provide a foundation for future success and growth. CCCLA would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the mentors for the 2020 Miss LA Chinatown competition: Catherine An, Elizabeth An, Hannah An, Julie Benniardi, Katherine Gao, Rachel Geicke, Julia Gouw, Claudia Lin Margolis, Jenny Lin, Debbie Ouyang, Cheyenne Peng, Dr. Ying Peng, Jessica Sun, Emily Wang, Panney Wei, Carrie Wang and Emily Wang.

Additionally, the gala featured an all-female entertainment lineup and Emcees to make the bold statement that this year, the Miss LA Chinatown competition is all about shining the spotlight on female empowerment. The evening was kick started by an energetic performance by eight year old singing sensation Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja, followed by opening remarks from Chamber Chairman Chester Chong, Chamber President Kevin Chen, and Chamber Vice-President and Gala Chair Gloria Chang Yip, who spoke about the changes to the Miss LA Chinatown competition. Emcees of the evening, Eileen Kwang (First Princess of 2012 Miss LA Chinatown) and Catherine Liang (2018 Queen of Miss LA Chinatown) kept the night upbeat and entertaining, with a male catwalk face-off. The contestants displayed beautiful fashion numbers by Chinese American brands, including ready to wear by Frankie, evening gowns from renowned couture designer Mandalay, and a modern approach of the Qi-pao by Gao Republic. Taryn Cheng and her dance group kept the energy going with a dance number and the tail end of the reception featured a show-stopping performance from Katherine Ho and Cheryl K, local Los Angeles natives and performers of the songs from blockbuster “Crazy Rich Asians.”

Of course, the highlight of the night culminated with the crowning of Miss Chinatown Los Angeles 2020, Miss Corrie Chan. A recent Yale graduate with a double major in Psychology and Economics, she grew up as a first-generation, low-income student in San Gabriel Valley. Despite her challenging background, Miss Chan was able to acquire an excellent education and plans to pursue a PhD in Psychology and teach at the collegiate level. She will be using her platform as Queen to empower youth to strive for greater educational opportunities regardless of life circumstances. Corrie’s presiding Royal Court of 2020 includes Miss Friendship Nicole Moc, Fourth Princess Victoria Cua, Third Princess Yiwa Lau, Second Princess Catherine Hang, and First Princess Angela Zhou. The reigning court, along with the Chamber, will help Queen Corrie Chan with philanthropic educational programs for the youth community in Los Angeles.

The Miss LA Chinatown competition itself doubles as an epicenter for interconnection amongst diverse businesses and civic leaders within the community. The event is one of the major fundraisers of the year for the Chamber, and the evening brought together influential members of the Chinese community to celebrate the Lunar New Year and their rich Chinese heritage. The event welcomed special guests Kitty Chen, Senior Vice President, Director of Consumer and Business Banking, East West Bank; John Griffo, Senior Business Director, Commerce Casino; Frank Rexach, Director of Asia Society, Southern California; Dr. Kenneth Sim, Executive Chairman and Co-Chief Executive, ApolloMed; Jimmy O. Yang, Actor and Comedian; Winston Young, Founder, Young Engineering; and Dr. Gay Q. Yuen, President of the Board of the Chinese American Museum. The evening was sponsored by Commerce Casino, East West Bank, Cathay Bank, Asia Society, Snow Monkey, Tower28, Purlisse, Yensa, Panda, Young Engineering, AA Meat Products Corp, Sheraton San Gabriel, SRAX and Big Token. Frankie, Mandalay, and Gao Republic were the generous fashion sponsors for the event and the media sponsor was L’Inspired and Society1.
