"A Memorable Year"
As the sun sets on my reign, I can sit back and recall the wonderful experiences I have enjoyed since being named Miss Los Angeles Chinatown.
The Year of the Enchanted Hare has certainly been enchanting. As in a fairy tale unfold ing, I was Cinderella going to a ball. With the help of generous people and kind friends who made this dream come true, I was rushed to banquets, television interviews, fashion shows, parades, and meetings with people of great influence in our community.
My reign took me to many interesting places. It gave me the opportunity to revisit the Orient, the place of my birth. I was one of twelve hundred overseas Chinese who participated in the birthday celebration of Taiwan.
I was privileged to pay my respects to the late beloved president, Chiang Kai-Shek. We watched the Army, Navy, and Air Force give a rare and spectacular performance in military skills. As a matter of fact, my birthday was celebrated on a battleship at sea with the Taiwan Navy.
I am home now, and it's time to hand my crown to the next fortunate girl. I know she will gain as much knowledge about our ancestral heritage as I did. During the past year, I found myself becoming more and more Chinese....something of which I am very proud.
As much as I have learned about my people, I have learned even more about myself. A beauty pageant is much more than just lime-lights and meeting VIPs. These things are not eternal. After all the glory is gone, the self-confidence and maturity a contestant gains stays on forever and are the bases on which to build her future adventures. I hope that this particular tradition will linger on in our history so that our children will benefit as we have.
My best wishes for an exciting new year.
Make way as the Year of the Dragon rolls in.
